Studio lit bubbles with splashes

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

These are photos of bubbles floating on the surface of water in a shallow dish.  Lit directly in front of the camera (thus back-lighting the bubble giving it’s rim glow) Rob and I tried on two nights different methods to get the bubble and the drip in the shot:

For the green bubbles, we used a strong solution of washing-up liquid (hence the green!), and Rob used a straw to blow a single bubble on the surface of the water.  I had to be quick to take the photograph as the bubbles were not very strong.  With the camera mounted on a tripod, and pre-focused, I used a dropper to drop water through the bubble from above.  It was quite tricky getting the timing right!

For the blue bubbles, I used children’s soap solution.  I actually blew the bubbles into the air (as a child would), caught the one I wanted on the wand and placed it on the surface of the water.  The bubbles were so much stronger that they could withstand being moved to the pre-focused area of the water and multiple drips from above.  I used a bigger plate to allow less clutter around each bubble and a better light – a single, large softbox.

Enjoy!

365 Project – Day 257

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

I love the way the leaves on an aspen tree flutter and sparkle in the wind.  I think this slow shutter, blurry look captures that movement.

365 Project – Day 256

I had another go at the bubbles and splashes.  This time I used better soap solution that allowed me to move the bubble into the camera’s range of vision and let me keep on shooting without it bursting.  Also, just a little more post production!

Weird clouds over Blackcomb as the sun set.  This image is exactly as it was out of the camera – no post processing at all.  Cropping out the surroundings except for a hint of the mountains isolate the weirdness of the clouds.

Temporary tube park at the Roundhouse

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

Whistler’s snow pack is still so high that the management decided to put a temporary tube park in at the Roundhouse.  At 2,200 feet this is tubing with a view!  They’re only charging $5/ea for as many runs as you want.  There isn’t a lift though – you have to hike for your fun.

You can see the snow depth as Rob (6’4″) stands on a cleared road literally just outside the Roundhouse.

365 Project – Day 254

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

During the summer months, Whistler Blackcomb offer a mountaintop BBQ on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.  I was asked to take photographs of it for them and in return Rob and I got to eat for free.  It was very tasty and I’d certainly recommend it.  It would have been a little nicer if the sun was out but you can’t have it all can you?

At the base of Blackcomb in summer there is a large number of kids adventure play activities.  This summer luge is just one of them and it’s lots of fun.

Ultra nerdism and some patience to capture this shot of a bubble with a water droplet inside.  I think it needs a little refining.

365 Project – Day 251

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Look what I found in my garden this morning!  A common garter snake, apparently.  Normally they have just the yellow stripes but sometimes, like this one, they also have red markings too.  He (it?) also had a red tongue but I couldn’t get a photo of that before the snake slipped away into the rocks.

365 Project – Day 250

This is 4 year old Brandon who, according to his dad, is ‘addicted’ to mountain biking.  Here’s he’s making a valiant effort to pull a wheely but can’t quite manage it………yet!
